North Adams is a mill city that became a contemporary art city, and it did it without losing the mill city part. That tension is the interesting thing about it.

MASS MoCA is the anchor — one of the largest contemporary art museums in the world, housed in a 19th-century factory complex, running concerts and festivals year-round alongside the galleries. The FreshGrass bluegrass festival happens here every September. Solid Sound (curated by Wilco) happens here in the summers it runs.

Studio 9 at the Porches Inn runs a weekly Tuesday open mic and regular ticketed shows — folk, bluegrass, jazz, intimate. The FreshGrass Foundation operates it. MCLA (Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts) is a public college with free-admission theater and gallery programming.
