Great Barrington is the southern Berkshires hub — independent, artsy, slightly self-aware about it, but in a way that mostly works.

The Mahaiwe is the anchor: a 700-seat restored historic theater from 1905 with programming that covers classical, jazz, folk, comedy, dance, and opera year-round. Under-30 tickets are $15 at the box office. The room is beautiful and the acoustics are worth the drive from anywhere in the county.

Berkshire Busk! runs free live music and dance on the downtown streets on Friday and Saturday nights through the warm months. Low-barrier, community-scaled, exactly what a good summer town should have.
